While the ETA will apply to many international travellers, some groups are exempt:
- British and Irish passport holders are not required to obtain an ETA
- travellers who already hold a UK visa are exempt from this requirement
The scheme is being rolled out in phases, with implementation dates varying by nationality. For instance:
- citizens of France and Germany will need to apply for an ETA for travel to the UK from 2 April 2025
Further updates on eligibility and timelines will be made available on the official UK government website gov.uk as the rollout continues.

Why is the ETA important?
The introduction of the ETA enhances security and border management while offering convenience to travellers. By pre-screening individuals before they arrive, the UK can ensure a smoother travel experience for both visitors and immigration authorities.
Anyone who tries to travel without an ETA is likely to be denied boarding by their airline or may be refused entry at the border. It will also be a criminal offence to knowingly arrive without an ETA if one is required.
